NHS Prescription Charges

These charges apply in England only. In northern Ireland Scotland and Wales, prescriptions are free of charge.

The NHS prescription charge is a flat rate amount which successive governments have thought reasonable to charge for those who can afford to pay for their medicines.

  • 1 item  £9.35
  • 2 item £18.30
  • 3 item £27.45
  • 4 item £36.60

The prescription charge is a contribution to the NHS. It is not a payment to the practice and it bears no relation to the cost of the item prescribed.
